We visited the Pacuare Lodge at the beginning of 2006 and had probably the best vacation ever. The lodge was referred to us by a friend, but I was still a bit apprehensive of the whole rafting and jungle thing. I need not have worried. We were treated like royalty by the staff and felt safe throughout the rafting trip to and from the lodge. The rafting trip in itself is almost worth the price of the trip.
The lodge is a truly magical place. Our very comfortable (practically deluxe) bungalow faced the river and was set amid giant trees and colorful flowers. We participated in the canopy tour which is a zip-line type adventure that sends you gliding from treetop to treetop down a jungle-clad mountain to the lodge. I am particularly afraid of heights, but with the urging of my spouse and daughter and the calmness of our guide, I decided to give it a go – well worth it (George, George, George of the jungle watch out for that tree...!)
The food at the lodge is truly out of this world, I really have no idea how they are able to prepare such delicacies in the middle of the jungle. Beware though, as there is no electricity. This actually made our experience more surreal and romantic (as romantic as you can be with a 14 year-old daughter in tow). We also hike to a waterfall with a natural slide where we splashed about to our hearts content. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and will go out of their way to answer your questions and get anything you need. I definitely recommend this trip to anyone who wants to experience something totally unique, exciting, relaxing and supremely enjoyable – we will be back next year!
