Eurocamp - We're a family of 4 with 2 kids aged 7 and 9. We went to Eurocamp for 5 days in May, at the very start of the site's 2009 season, and stayed in one of the 2-bed port-a-cabins. The camp was only about 40% full and felt very relaxed. The young staff were extremely friendly and helpful with prompt service on arrival and with visiting us the day before departure to confirm the arrangements for leaving (very relaxed - no departure inspections!). During our stay they always said hello when we saw them and I liked the nice touch of having a stock of games and sports equipment for free loan. The site itself is a 5 minutes walk from the beach and there is a large supermarket 5 minutes walk in the other direction. The centre of town is only 10 minutes walk away.
The swimming pool area is simple but effective, a small paddling pool, a main swimming pool and a jacuzzi under a strange glass pyramid shelter. The biggest disappointment was that although the weather was warm (about 22 degrees on average), the main pool was too cold for me although the kids were happy enough - hardy children! I was told it was heated but if so, the setting was far too low.
Apart from a day trip to La Rochelle (about 1 hour away and worth the visit), we stayed either at the site or on the beach. Very relaxing and quiet so while it was great for us, I wouldn't recommend for those looking for exciting nightlife.
The accommodation was fine - it's brilliant to be able to have a bedroom for the kids so that we can settle them down and then sit outside with a glass of wine and enjoy the evening - so much better than sharing a hotel room where we find we end up going to bed at the same time.
Overall, very pleased with the holiday as we got exactly what we wanted: a pool and a beach so the kids could have fun while we relaxed, a quiet and safe environment, and sufficiently spacious accommodation. We will definitely Eurocamp again!
(Oh and for anyone who does go - look to see if they've turned the Union Jack the right way up above the reception hut - I think the receptionist thought I was kidding when I pointed it out!)
Bel - La Tranche Sur Mer via Eurocamp - Sally Ann Morrey. Date of travel: Aug 2006
We tried a budget 1 week holiday as an extra to our usual foreign jaunts this year. What a mistake. We were sucked in to a very nice glossy brochure of the area and the lure of spacious outdoor living - all of which we have experienced before in the south of France, Cyprus and the Canaries on previous years. The accomodation was ' rough' and not a one off plot that we had the misfortune to be allocated. I checked with other people in similar accommodation and recieved very much the same question. Some left early to either return to the UK or other sites. We chose not to report our disatisfaction to the reps at the site who were in fact extremely helpful & it was the last week that the site was open before it closed for the season. There is little that a rep can do when the company you work for gives you and your clients sub standard or ill designed equipment to work with. If you're ever thinking of booking with Eurocamp please consider the following - The bed design (double) is a metal frame with two parallel bars from left to right across the thigh and middle back area as you lay upon it. This is covered with a 'chain mail' style covering. The mattress is made of low quality polyfoam approx. 8cm thick. Obviously after a short while this becomes worn in term of its ability to retain its original purpose (ie to keep you comfortable). A good chiropracter or osteopath should be able to put you right after a weeks unbroken sleep on this style of bed. The rest of the equipment is of a similar sub standard (cooking utensils/ cooker etc).
The site 'Bel' is a traditional style camping area that other camping companies use and has a 3* rating. the facilities provided by the site are very good, have good standard fittings and are maintained to a decent standard. The site boasts a shop/ small supermarket - it's basically non exsistent - theres a bar that sells the odd loaf of bread, matches and sells pizzas. don't rely on it - there's a 'Super U' supermarket a mere 900 yards from the entrance to the site.
La Tranche Sur Mer itself is a very nice place, as most of the reorts in the area. However, if you have a penchant for sea piers you'll be disappointed. The one on La Tranche is closed. The place seems a haven for the surf crowd of all ages and has very nice beaches - albeit , there are different beaches for different needs (ie - fishing/ surfing/ swimming/ sailboarding etc). If you hate sand (like I do - our pitch was on a very sandy area), there are no sun loungers to hire - for some reason the French have not caught on to this hoilday piece of equipment on their beaches. So its the old picnic mat or similar to lounge in the sun and get covered in sand with the mere whisp of breeze off the sea.
Would I go again ? 'Yes' but not via Eurocamp, it's definately a hotel or similar in future Tour Operator: Eurocamp

We had a fabulous time at Bel, in July & August in 2006 as did every one of the people we met. We had some rainy days, but made the most of our situation. We made the most of the weather and had fun. Yes the bar was limited, but it sold beer, wine, coke & ice-creams & the staff were friendly. The town was walking distance, as was a huge supermarket! The beach clean, vast and beautiful. The kids club was fabulous. We don't do moaning, we save up all year for our holidays and thoroughly enjoy ourselves and any adventures we may have. A lovely site with lots for the kids to do. The showers and loos were so clean and we're going back this year! With Eurocamp again! Recommend to all young families.
