I have been going to the Ardeche region of France (in particular Vagnas and Vallon Pont D'Arc) for the last few years in the summer and have stayed at this gorgeous hotel (the Chardon) and always had a great time. The rooms are spacious and have loads of character, and the hotel owners Gus and Caroline are charming, helpful and always do their best to ensure a great stay. In addition the food is yummy, French food at its best, and always just what you need after a long day canoeing on the river, walking in the hills or mountain biking in the great outdoors.
