We visited Pallatium Hotel in 2008, last week of August. Lovely friendly hotel, close to the beaches, my son loved the pool. For our first holiday together just my young son and I, we loved it! It was clean, beds made almost every day. Bins emptied. Located under the flight path of Heraklion airport, but you wouldn't even notice it after a day or so, not a problem. My son has asked to go back there again this year he loved the pool so much!

When I booked at the Pallatium Hotel hotel through First Choice who had it labelled incorrectly as Palladium Hotel. I have stayed in plenty of two star hotels so understood what to expect for my money which was fine. However there were elements to this hotel that were totally unexpected even for a basic two star. I shall be brief and list them: Arriving to find two twin beds pushed together with one single sheet. When asking for an extra pillow as the wafer thin ones were tough to sleep on and being told there were none in the whole hotel. Arriving on the Friday for one week, the room was 'cleaned' once on the Tuesday. I say 'cleaned' and I'll explain briefly. The holey sheets were replaced for more sheets with holes in. The towels were changed for frayed ones. The overfilled toilet bin (as you cannot put toilet paper down the toilet) were changed finally. The floor... was not touched, I spotted a broom outside the door so did a quick sweep. It was gross. The toilet paper was not changed (we took the one from the communal toilet). Thats about it I think. The 'kitchen': I know self catering can involve basic facilities in a two star. The room was supposed to hold three people. We had two forks, one knife, two plates and three bowls (one of which had moldy food all over it) They had no plug for the sink and nothing to wash up with. Perhaps the worst part of this was the 'cooker' an electric hob with plates. It was a bit confusing to use, with no real indication of what switch turns on what. But after using it once, it would not turn off, so we had to take out the drawer underneath and remove the plug when we weren't using it. Felt a bit hazardous to say the least and I certainly would have demanded a room change if I had a child with me. The pool: Looked lovely at a quick glance. Until we got in and noticed that there was a layer of thick scum around the edge that someone had scratched letters into. This is a July holiday, not even half way through the summer season. I wonder if they ever clean this pool. The family: I read reports about this hotel and one thing people seemed to like were the family that run the hotel. I'm sure they are if you go out of your way to speak to them and don't make any comments or ask questions. TO be honest, when you go on holiday it isn't a big deal if the family are nice. Its a big deal if they can clean your room and give the basics like toilet paper and a change of bin. On the whole I'm surprised first choice has rooms with this hotel. I'm always up for a bargain and understand what I get for it, but to be honest in all the two stars I've stayed this is the only one that didn't clean their rooms at least every other day. The key thing with a cheap hotel is, basic but clean. If you haven't got the clean then you are definitely paying for something you can get better elsewhere. If cleanliness isn't a big thing for you then this hotel is fine. Quick note on the location... Gouves is quiet and the beaches are nice but crowded. It's a quick transfer to the airport which is always handy and it has plenty of links to other resorts. But.. you can do far far better in Crete. I travelled a lot while in Crete and would recommend Sissi, a beautiful under developed resort. It doesn't have that tacky feel that a lot of the other resorts have.

Maria, Manos and family made us feel very welcomed and also our stay unique. The room very nice with excellent facilities, very clean and nice view. We enjoy sunbathing in the pool area listening Greek music. We felt like Greek people. Manos taught us Greek dances the nights they had parties for their guests... very funny. But I'm sorry Manos but unfortunately I cannot remember the steps now. This hotel is only 10 min from the centre of Gouves and 5 min for the sandy beaches where we met many people of different nationalities. Maria we will see you next year and thanks for everything!

The hotel was basic, could have been cleaned more often. The sheets could have been changed more. The beach was ok but not much nightlife around. No entertainment in hotel, the town, about five min away, was ok. For late night you had to walk down long dark road then to your home. You can hire quad bike but not loads of places to go.

Me and my mum stayed at the Pallatium Hotel and we enjoyed every day. Yea, the rooms were basic but with a great restaurant around the corner that served great food, you can't go wrong. The welcome was warm and Maria and her two childern make you feel at home and are more than willing to help with anything. The pool was great and cleaned daily and when the weather is as hot as it was when we were there it was a great place to cool down. If you're looking for a nice quiet break for not that much money it's a great place because 5 mins up the road is a bus stop which then you can get on a bus to anywhere you wish, like Malia and Heraklion and they run to 11pm. The area may not be the best for clubbing and partying but the buses can take you there so then you can come back and relax recovering by the pool. One thing was the cleaner could come more often but if you ask for new sheets if it hasn't been done, Maria will do her best to help sort problems and queries out. Overall me and my mum, who are both ends of the spectrum, really enjoyed it and found everything we needed to be able to enjoy ourselves. I'm sure I'm going back within the next year. It was a great rest!

Me and my wife have just come back and we have got to say we realy enjoyed it. The 1st thing I have got to comment on is the family and we think that they was all friendly. Maria, Manos, Costas, Victoria and Eva, ok maybe the sheets wasn't changed enough but on the whole the accommodation was really nice. It does cost quite a lot of money to eat out all the time and drink but there isn't that much else to do as it's quite quiet there. The other people we met there was excellent like Paul, Helen and Jacob, Bruno and Monica, Bob and Terry. We all had a great time and when we had a Greek night everyone in the hotel had a lot of fun and Maria was giving free shots out which was a great touch. So to sum things up we will definitely be going back to see Maria and her family as we was made to feel so welcome and haven't got a bad thing to say about the whole holiday...

Good base location. Pool area always clean, local buses fab to explore other resorts. Not ideal for wild nightlife, great for families and couples wanting to relax. Maria and her family make you welcome. Food available was not very extensive but plenty of places to choose from locally. Sheets and towels could have been changed a bit more regularly. Overall 9/10.

We stayed at the Pallatium, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Marie and family made us feel welcomed and were helpful and very friendly. It was an ideal location for the shops and beach. We found the local restaurants relaxed and value for money. The supermarkets were well stocked. The beach was perfect for my son and the donuts on sale were yummy. Would love to go back to a hotel where as a single mum you were met with friendly guests who included you in the holiday scene. The accommodation was valve for money, and I could not fault the whole experience. P.S. could Keith send me our pics!!! Thank you.

Palatium hotel is absolutely amazing me and my family have been there and stayed at the Palatium 4 times in a row. The people are fantastic and friendly. The food is brilliant and thats coming from the pickiest person on the planet!! everything about the Palatium screams welcome. The pool is refreshing and the heat is amazing but most of all I love the fact that the beach and every food and drink tavern is only a walk away Ill definatly be visiting agen soon hopefully in the near future!

Very basic
Gouves, what a place it is, no nice beaches, portaloos on the ones that are there and what a stink, inflated prices, same old rubbish. The Pallatium Hotel was very basic, 7 euros a nite for noisy aircon or its doors open and give blood to the mozzies. The beds come with a single sheet and if they are not dirty the cleaner leaves them ...she comes only twice a week. The toilet roll situation is dire if you need to ask Maria the owner you will hear her famous catch frase of WHAT NOW. This will usualy be her reaction to most requests. The pool is cool and wet.... and the sides are thick with oily scum. We were there for two weeks and it was not touched. Two guests got ear infections after a week of ariving. Go in at your own risk! The bar is ok, Maria's son is usualy the barman. Great as long as you are buying drinks. Not the cheapest or the politest.
