Many thanks to Le Lac Itasy Centre, we had a lovely time there. Food was best anywhere. Their pizza was the best I've had anywhere in the world [not joking] I don't know what the other gentlemen was talking about here ... there are no crocodiles in this part of Madagascar (and no river called Grandiago!). and certainly virtually no mosquitoes because of the altitude. The guest house is the same altitude as the capital city at 1400m. They do boating in very large "pirogues", guided local tours (excellent fun & knowledge), a giant walk-in labyrinth for all ages to enjoy(!!!), lovely English breakfast (Earl grey tea, fresh and warm jam scones, pancakes). They also gave us a pickup from the capital city in a very native taxi brousse (minibus). The driver was careful, which we're told is not normal here - but he was great. They also have a crazy golf course, which they gave us free access to as we were staying as guests for 3 days. Really, I cannot sing highly enough of the family who run this place. I must also talk of their garden. It was so relaxing! they have a collection of flowers, ferns, trees and large lawn. The view is breathtaking. On their advice, we got up one morning at 5.30 and went for a walk before the sun rose. The sunrise here is breathtaking. I've included a picture of the room which we had. It was large, quiet, excellent bed. I suppose I have to say something negative on this website, but I really don't want to. we simply enjoyed, enjoyed, enjoyed! There are some lovely walks here as well. along a river called Lily (lovely name), to 2 magnificent waterfalls. There are cold-water geysers. Smaller waterfalls. You can watch the boatmen on the lake. Take a walk to the crater behind the guesthouse. Take a tour to the Sacred Isle where an ancient royal family used to live. All I can say is that I highly recommend this guesthouse to people who want an adventurous holiday. Yes, the waitress was shy and quiet. But that added to the peaceful nature of this lovely place on the edge of madagascar's 3rd largest lake. Oh. They don't have TV's here in the rooms. There is electricity and hot water, but no TV's. But, really, in this place you don't want a TV. It's a pleasure to relax here. Well done to the British family who run this treasure.

Le Lac Itasy Centre - well impressive
Man - this was one huge adventure. You gotta go here dudes. I was backpacking across Madagascar with a buddy (Yo Friedrich!) and got to Itasy. The nature here is GORGEOUS. HUGE LAKE. HUGE WATERFALLS. Man, I went on the dug out canoes and saw some well impressive lake coastlines. Derek and Fleur are great. Their son and daughter are real pros as guides (and they are just little kiddies - yo Michael!)The hotel is a in fact a small guesthouse , 250m from lake. Food was better than anywhere I ate in "Tana". Their service was okayish (the waitress was so shy!) - actually it was great man! Extra activities: CRAZY GOLF (go Derek), canoeing (Yo Sam), mountain walks, waterfalls, massive history of area, Excellent if like me you're on gap year. Gotta say, there were no mosquitoes in the hotel. Dunno why but great! Oh, for ya kiddies, they have the most amazing labyrinth that you can walk into and get lost in. Have fun all ... we did!

Le Lac Itasy Centre is 125km west of capital of Tana. Costs 7000 Ariary to get to it on public bus on Bus journey. You have 2 ask taxi drivers (in capital) to get you to the station for AMPEFY ITASY. Taxi cost us 10 000 Ariary (which I understand is too much!) It is a 2 and 1/2 hour journey.

Found in the very centre of Madagascar, Le Lac Itasy Centre is a small guest house, made out of granite. Run by an English family. Not as hot as coast. Being set in the highlands, altitude 1400m+, there are not many mosquitoes. Bedrooms incredible, simple but full of character. View over a huge lake is breathtaking, with the sun streaming in through the windows at 5.30 in the morning. We had to stay for 3 days ... would have stayed another couple of days if time permitted. Food was good, though a small menu. No stomach problems! Yea! Bathroom was first rate ... seems to be big let down in most Madagascar hotels. Thumbs up to "Le Lac Itasy Centre" and to Derek and Fleur who run it! The Centre also ran Tours to some huge waterfalls and geysers. The waterfalls are about 25m high by about 30m across. There were people on hand to help our kids stay safe in the water ... good service. Bad point: Although you can go swimming in the river, you cannot swim in the lake ... too dirty due to huge erosion of the surrounding mountains.
