This has to rank as the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The room was horrendous and not at all as advertised on their website. We had the misfortune of staying in Room 16. The Windows didnt close properly. The curtains were see through, The heating didnt work, the television didnt work, the beds were awful, It was freezing cold with no way of warming it up. When I turned the tap on in what passed for a bathroom the whole room smelt of raw sewage. Quite honestly this was the worst hotel ive ever stayed in. Having had the misfortune of staying one night here we tried to check out but the wouldnt let us as said there was a seven day cancelation policy even though the room was completly unlike what we ordered. Unfortunatly we had paid in cash as they claimed their credit card machine wasnt working. Something that happens quite a lot apparently and they refused to give us our money back for the remaining time. Eventually we swallowed the £200 pounds plus that we had been robbed of by these criminals and went to stay in the hotel Ibis just round the corner. Please avoid like the plauge if you want ot have any kind of decent stay. I also strongly advise you look on some of the other review sites. Had i looked at the reviews first i would never have booked.

Hotel Barbacan - I'm afraid our experience in this "hotel" wasn't as we expected. We were 6 people who had booked a six-bed room for two nights during the weekend. We booked it more than two weeks in advance through their website and we received a confirmation e-mail. The day before we arrived, in the evening, the hotel staff called me and told me that there had been a problem with the authorisation of my credit card and that we could only stay for the first night. When we arrived the only solution the man at the desk gave us was to split into several rooms and pay 45 euros per person per night, instead of 30 euros which was what we had arranged. He was quite rude and he didn't care at all about us. We paid cash for that night and looked for another place to stay. The 7-bed room we got (although we were just 6 people) has little to do with the pictures, at least it's not as nice and clean. We were on the ground floor, so people walking in the street could see you. The carpet was very ugly and there was a large space between the door and the floor, so any mouse or cockroach could easily enter at any time, and my bed was just beside. The light was very dim and the bathroom was ridiculously small, perhaps just 1 metre wide. The place where breakfast is served is also very small, although the meal was OK. Then, according to their rules, if the fire alarm rings you'll have to pay a 500 euro fine! Our main complain about this hotel is obviously that they cannot change all your plans some hours before you arrive and not care at all. They definitely wanted us to pay more, or assigned our booked second night to other people for a higher price. Whatever it was, that's not the way you should treat your customers!!!
Even though so cheap, still not value for money - V Rawlley. Date of travel: May 2008

The room at the Hotel Barbacan was mouse infested. We paid for 7 single beds, but we got 3 doubles and 1 single. One of the mattresses was a poor excuse for a sleeping surface. The carpet was extremely dusty; we would sneeze upon entering the room. The window would only open 2 inches. For 7 of us staying for 6 days, this was in no way enough ventilation for the room. The toilet/shower was disgraceful; the drain consisted of a tile missing in the floor revealing a huge pipe. There was no lock on the toilet door. Worse still, it was hard to close the door, since the door handle kept falling off. When that happens, you could find yourself locked in the toilet, even thought there wasn't a lock! One person taking a shower would leave the whole toilet floor in a huge puddle of water, so all seven of us in the morning would leave a pool. This meant that we couldn't use the toilet for the rest of the day without getting our feet completely wet, rather than go in with our shoes and leave the toilet floor in a layer of muddy water. We left food out on the first night and mice had come and chewed through the wrapping whilst we were asleep in the room. There was nothing good about this room. We paid little for the room so we weren’t expecting anything too great, but this was NOT value for money.
