Great place to stay
Cape Agulhas Guest House (see picture): After trying several B&Bs, which were all full, and the local hotel (too expensive!), we were referred to the Cape Agulhas Guest House, run by Babs and Louis Nell, where we were offered a double-bedded room and full breakfast for R300 inclusive for the night. The room was a trifle small, but adequate, sparkling clean and pleasantly decorated, with a little bathroom (shower/toilet/washbasin), and crisp white towells. We had a lovely sea-view from the dormer windows. We decided to go out for the evening to wine and dine with a local friend, so on our departure asked our host whether we should have a key for the front door, in case we were late. We were told that he liked to lock up at 11pm, and if we were going to be later than this please call and let him know ... seemed no keys were available. It felt a bit odd having a curfew! Still, we made it back just after 11 and the door was still open, so I locked up and left the key on the desk! As we got ready for bed, being three girls together after a night out, we giggled and laughed a bit. After I put the light out there was a tapping on the door ... I opened it tentatively, and there stood Louis, our host, in his dressing gown, asking us to "please be quiet and consider the other guests"! Again, I felt like I was back in boarding school! Breakfast was excellent, I must say, but awkward as Louis rushed in and out looking concerned and hovering with toast racks and coffee pot, being a little over-intrusive! Babs told me as we chatted on the "stoep" that they have only run the place for a couple of months, and have yet to experience their first summer season. I have a feeling that our "noise" and staying out late will be mild indiscretions compared to what they have in store when the summer crowd hit town! Still, they are a sweet, well-meaning couple who run an excellent house ... as long as you don't mind being treated like a wayward teenager, it is a great place to stay!
