We visited the Lord Milner with great anticipation created by the historic nature of this great town and what we have read on the internet. We were greeted by a dysfunctional fountain, a hotel where the paint was pealing from the roof and walls and a lobby area with cigarette buds on the carpets. The rooms were old, not "classic", bedding was torn and the shower dirty and broken. The Lairds bar was dirty, some chairs broken and staff were lingering around. The pub lunch was very poorly presented and totally tasteless. In the end we cancelled our stay at the hotel as our disappointment was simply too large - we opted for a stay in Montague a 2 hour drive away. The Lord Milner is not only a disappointment but also a reflection of how bad management can destroy a national jewel. This hotel is not recommended at all.

The Lord Milner hotel is wonderful - a real old school type of hotel with neatly dressed staff in aprons and mob caps, an old man tinkering on the piano, antique furniture and a killer buffet breakfast. We stayed in the self catering accommodation to the side of the Hotel and although we werent using the facilities, it was very well equipped, clean and neat. The Hotel has wonderful lawns, an old style bar, creaky wooden staircases and a pool 9perfect for the stifling summer heat in the Karoo!)
