Away with the Fairies offers exactly what one would expect of a backpackers tucked away in the middle of forest and mountains in the middle of nowhere. Hippies, earnest Dutch backpackers, revellers, laid-back locals, those that have arrived and never left... We arrived on New Year's Day and the barman, chef and driver were all still drunk, so no supper on offer that night, but loud music and partying... Fortunately that died down as they lost their wind before nightfall. Wonderful separate cottage called the Hobbit due to the low door frames (we booked a double room) - very comfortable, with a fully self catering kitchen, braai facilities (with wood and kindling) and bathroom, shared just with 2 others. Food is available on request and apparently really good, there is a dam-style pool, spectacular views and a totally laid back atmosphere. We spotted about 10 Cape Parrots while lying on the lawn (there are only about 300 left in the world). Camping and dorms are also available, all very reasonably priced. There is also a tree house, view point and many of the hikes start from the bottom of the garden. We were thoroughly impressed with the accommodation, and the noise died down early. A great place to get involved, or chill out at your leisure - definitely above and beyond the usual backpacker fare.
