We just got back from a two week holiday in South Africa, finishing off at Shamwari Game Reserve. We stayed at Long Lee Manor and were very impressed. The staff were very professional, the food was excellent and our room had a gorgeous view over the open 'veld'. But what must be mentioned is our ranger Jamie. He was a charming bloke who managed to enthuse us even further about the environment with his knowledge of the bush and passion for animals, even the birds. We're not quite over the hill yet, but appreciated Jamie's consideration toward us and engaging conversation. If you can afford it, Shamwari is well worth it!

First of all, it is important to note that I only went to Shamwari as part of a work get-a-way that my boss paid for in full. With the entire 4 day trip (including flight from Cape Town to P.E.) costing roughly twice my monthly income per person, it would have been impossible for me to fund my own trip.
That said, the suite that I stayed in was huge. It was probably the same size as (or bigger than) my entire flat in Gardens, Cape Town. It was very luxurious, with a large comfy bed, couch & coffee table, TV, desks, cabinets, and large separate bath & shower. It was very well equipped.
Much to my surprise, the toilet didn't work 100% and only flushed when it wanted to.
I was surprised that with it being 5-star the TV wasn't on M-net or DSTV, but then what kind of ungrateful degenerate would want to watch TV at such an amazing game farm anyways?
The old farmhouse that the 4 meals per day were served in was beautifully restored, and the food was exquisite, with exceptional service. The separate pub/lounge was warm and cozy.
The swedish massage at the spa was very relaxing, and the streamroom and jacuzzi were the perfect combination.
Being Canadian, I was the only one crazy enough in the entire lodge (except for a 9 year old girl who got the idea from me) to swim in one of the 2 pools, which were absolutely freezing. Somehow I lasted 10 minutes, but then nearly succombed to self inflicted hypothermic convulsions which could only be partialy calmed by a steaming hot shower and alcohol. I was also surprised that a 5-star lodge would not have heated pools, but the ones they have would be a life saver in the summer.
Again, being Canadian, I was shocked at the outrageous phone bill that I was charged for making a few calls to a local cellphone from my room, forgetting the expensive pay-by use phone rates (and 5-star inflation) in S.A. I only blame my own ignorance though.
The open view of the plain and bush-coverd hills swarming with animals that my suite opened on to was absolutely divine and unforgetable.
No complaints!
