La Axarquia is a region in the province of Malaga, Spain. It is developing into a highly popular region for tourists to stay. At its lower tip is the coastal resort of Torre del Mar. With the capital of the region Velez Malaga five minutes inland from the coast.
Velez Malaga has not developed into a tourist town and retains much of its ancestral Arabic charm. It is known for its locally produced quality olive oil and wines. The history of the town dates back to the Phoenicians. And there are a number of pieces of architecture and a few palaces still remaining. For the shopper there is a massive commercial shopping centre between Velez and Torre del Mar. The centre offers a huge range of shops for you to spend a day or two looking around. If you want to stay near Velez there are a few properties available for rent.
Moving up past Velez and into the heart of the Axarquia lies Lake Viñuela. It is a huge man made lake that supplies much of the region with its water. It is used for recreation in the form of fishing, swimming, sailing and canoeing. No motorised boats are permitted on the lake. Surrounding the lake are restaurants offering meals using a variety of locally produced food.
Old and new houses border the lake. Many of these are available for rent and offer a wonderful stay for your holiday. Staying in this area provides easy access to the beaches, airports and cities such as Granada and Cordoba. You can immerse yourself in the peace and tranquilly of this beautiful area.
There are a myriad of White Villages in the area. Comares sits on the pinnacle of a mountain and offers outstanding views. Where you can again rent a wonderful converted cortijo (farmhouse) sit by the pool and gaze out across the mountain tops to the sea beyond. Other White Villages include Cómpeta, Frigiliana, Salares, Arenas, Alcaucín and Colmenar, all of which still retain the rustic charm of inland Spain.
It really is a great place to soak up the culture of rural Spain and enjoy the scenery; whilst having that al fresco meal on the terrace of your holiday villa. Stay in the campo and only short 35 min drive from the airport and mostly within a 20 minute drive from the beach. So you can get the best of both worlds.
