Bolivia
Consisting mainly of a high altitude landlocked plain connecting two ranges of the Andes Mountains, Bolivia was home to mysterious ancient civilizations that thrived in their lofty empire until the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. Today a holiday in Bolivia offers the chance to explore the ancient ruins, traditions and culturemore
I cannot wait to go back. - Nigel Tompkins. Date of travel: Apr 2005
Copacabana is one of my most favourite places in the world. The small town is situated just 5 miles from the Peruvian border on the shores of Lake Titicaca. It is a quiet spot, for now at least, and has amazing levels of ancient and contemporary culture to it. It has, in recent years, attracted your average backpacker who stays for a few days; the more dedicated travellers who have more time on their side stay for months exploring the Lake; the locals who are probably the most relaxed and gentile of people; the Spanish heritage and finally the Andean (Incan) culture which one feels all around the town in ruins and lost ways of life. I stayed only for a few days to explore the Isla del Sol y Isla del Luna, which have in recent years become more accustomed to dealing with tourists but nevertheless a fantastic break away from the hustle and bustle of La Paz. Bolivia is still very cheap and a meal out in a top restaurant (with some rather interesting Bolivian merlot) still only comes to around $10. Accommodation was cheap and clean throughout and travelling around the country is made easy with a bus system that is growing more efficient each year. I cannot wait to go back. Tour Operator: none

There's no doubt that you have to go to Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. And if you are travelling on to Chile it is possible to leave the tour on the last day and have a bus pick you up and take you to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile.

Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is wicked, I took a tour over new year and we had a fantastic time although the high altitude knocks you a bit. But that also means you don't need to take very much alcohol to get pissed! The scenery is awesome though - really out of this world. The tour we took was supposed to be the most organised (Colque Tours), but the guide was a bit grumpy and some of the meals were disgusting - but they were pretty cheap so that's what you get.

To find the real Bolivia that was pre-tourism days where gringos and their tourist money don't send the locals into a 'feeding' frenzy, head south to Tupiza, the Wild West of Bolivia. People very friendly and relaxed, and no hooting taxis to follow you about town. It is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid country (American bank robbers of old) and exploring the amazing cactus-studded country is the thing to do here. Very refreshing.
