Gibraltar
Historically the most fought about piece of rock in the world, the headland on a promontory at the bottom end of the Iberian Peninsula guards the strait of Gibraltar, the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. Gibraltar is a tiny British colony with a small town and harbour on its Atlantic side, and cliffs dropping intomore
Cable Car - angelofsol. Date of travel: Jun 2011
The Cable Car is the worst way to get up to the top of the Rock. The lines they have for tickets can get easily muddled and the employees don't seem to pay attention half the time. Because of the confusion caused one of the ladies at the ticket counter was very rude to us and it was very embarrassing. And the confusion we experienced wasn't because of a language barrier. Had my husband not just wanted to pay, and had we simply not just wanted to go to the top of the Rock, snap our pictures and go back down I would have not given the Cable Car company my money, turned around and caught one of the van tours to the top. Don't do the Cable Car unless you want to risk being treated like children. The guys who did the vans were much nicer and I really wish we had gone with them. Gibraltar was neat enough... a little bit of the UK abroad, but the experience we had at the ticket counter soured my experience and my mood of the place.
Gibraltar Dolphins - Graham. Date of travel: Nov 2010
Gibraltar Dolphins
The Bay of Gibraltar is one of the best places to see wild dolphins in Europe. There is a 98% chance of seeing them on a boat trip and usually see over 100.
Cannot fault The Rock - Reckless. Date of travel: Aug 2010
Trying to think of a bad point so that I don't sound completely infatuated with the place. The only one I can think of is that there is a lot of cast concrete around if you know what I mean by that. But not in a Milton keynes way. In fact it isn't a bad point at all, its part of the old British character. I hope they dont change it. No I tried but I cannot fault Gibraltar. Dont get me wrong I love seeing the world and experiencing different cultures but when you find yourself just wishing that Britain was a bit warmer cheaper and still 'aloud' to be proud of ourselves without the PC police teling us to take down our flags and what not, then go to Gibraltar. Well done to Gibraltar for keeping the 'Great' in Great Britain. What a place for a long weekend escape after work.
Loved it, now living it - Andy. Date of travel: Mar 2009
Loved it, now living it
Gibraltar is a fantasic place. We visited in the usual way, but always wanted to spend more time there, we always travelled from Spain and did not get chance to see the place properly. We now live in Gibraltar and we can't believe our luck. We have two children and this is paradise for them. If you think you can do Gibraltar in half a day you are sadly mistaken. Use the buses, take the tour, read some history, take a walk. To say that Gibraltar is one street and nothing more misses the point. We have been living here for over a year and we have not even scratched the surface. Maybe to appreciate the place, there should be more pre-planning involved. Select the music, the entertainment etc that you would like to see and then investigate what is here. Believe me, there is everything you could want. The people here are incredibly talented. If you want something different, get here for National Day in September, but don't expect to sleep because they know how to party.
A day in the life of a Gibraltarian - Margot Hinz. Date of travel: May 2008
A day in Gibraltar is pretty much all you need. It's an odd place, with mixed parentage of Spanish and English and a serious identity crisis. But with that behind you, it grows on you. Do the tour, see the dolphins, listen to the opera play in the magical tombs of the cave, do some bargain shopping and that's pretty much all there is. If you are a history boffin or an enterprising botanist, you would love it. It's a must see, but not a must stay kind of place.
Want to do a sailing course? - Margot Hinz. Date of travel: May 2008
If you have ever wanted to learn how to sail, Gibraltar is perfect. Why learn to sail in somewhere wet and cold? Gibraltar is warm and sunny (mostly) with the odd stormy day to make things interesting and schools of dolphins to keep you entertained or to save you when you fall overboard. The best thing is that you can visit 3 other counties while you're at it. End your day by drinking an ice cold one in a different place each night, Gibraltar, Spain, Portugal or Morocco.
Great Place - Jack. Date of travel: Mar 2008
Great weekend away and now with cheap EasyJet flights its well worth a visit, lots to see nice beaches on West Side of the Rock.
Had a great time, pity its so small! - djinni. Date of travel: Dec 2007
Visited my brother for almost 2 weeks in gib. Staying with family made it easier of course! but language barrier was never an issue though. Walked up the Mediterranean steps at the back of mountain - great views! The only irritating thing is the size - super small so as soon as u want to explore you must have your shengen ready for border crossing to spain. went on a dolphin safari, totally worth it. the barbary apes were funny because i'm from africa, monkeys are really no big deal to me but seems they are to UK folks. I felt super safe, lost my wallet in the bus and the bus driver ran after me with it. on another occasion i lost my wallet in a shrub - realized it later, walked back (i remember i opened my bag to answer the phone on that specific corner) and viola, the wallet was still stuck in the shrub on said corner. I think the drawback with any developed country is that its not exotic enough nor challenging! Everything was easy :-) Anybody who also speaks a latin based language like english, dutch, german can pick up basic spanish quite fast. Try learn thai. Even though the ocean is beautiful, not much beach to speak of. Visited those tunnels in mountain (from where they bombed ships) and its super cool looking down ! yikes what a drop! the landing strip is the BEST! make sure to get a window seat!!!
I absolutey love Gibraltar - sonia. Date of travel: Aug 2007
I absolutey love Gibraltar
Being half Gibraltarian, Gibraltar is like a second home. You can not guage such a wonderful place in a day or half a day. I recommend any one who goes there firstly visits the tourist office and get a guide book. Plenty to see, and if you know (or take time to find out) where to go there is plenty to do. The Apes are really great creatures. As wild animals if treated with respect will not hurt you.
Dolphin Safari disappointment - UnhappyUK. Date of travel: Jul 2007
I just returned from a lovely holiday in Gibraltar, it is a place I have visited many times before and I have always enjoyed my time there. However this last visit was spoilt when I arranged a trip with the Dolphin Safari in Marina Bay. I had arranged my visit and given a deposit when they called me a told me that they could not take me at the time I had booked. When I could not attend at the alternative time I asked for a refund which was granted. I then sat to have a drink at a nearby restaurant when the manager of the Dolphin Safari approached me. He then proceeded to stand over me, talking aggressively until I gave him the money back. Somewhat shaken at the experience, I gave him the money, but in acting this way he has lost the custom of all of my friends of family who are also frequent visitors to Gibraltar. There are several other companies in gibraltar that offer dolphin trips, and so I recommend that anyone who is interested in seeing the doplins goes with a company that does not have a policy of bullying customers.
I Loved Gibraltar - S.L.W. Date of travel: Mar 2006
We just returned from Gibraltar and we had the most sensational adventure of a lifetime, with Miguel as our guide. We not only covered the well known sights which came alive with Miguel's amazing explanations but we also visited many places off the beaten track. If you are planning a trip to Gibraltar, do yourself a favor and contact David at travelfree@worldemail.com Tour Operator: Ben Dahan I seriously have to say it was one of the best trips I have ever taken. I took the time to see the entire Rock Plus Tangier, Morocco and Cannot decide which was the best. All I can say is that people should travel. Get over and realize that it is completely safe. Make sure you research the country well. If your time is short, go on a Private tour. It's worth it. They are very flexible and interesting. This was a fantastic trip; we went to Tangier, Fez, Marrakesh and Casablanca. I completely recommend it. Gibraltar Plus Morocco is a Country of open and friendly People. Do not be surprised if you are suddenly talking to a stranger about the country’s situation. Our guide was also the best. I also recommend trying to contact him for future trips; he knows very well the history of the country and the sights, especially Moroco history if you are interested. Gibraltar was Very Nice, and Morocco was truly amazing. The food was nothing short of delicious everytime. The people were very friendly. The country itself is just so beautiful. Our biggest regret was not spending more time there. Tour Operator: travelfree@worldemail.com

Myself, partner and 2 kids went for 1 week, we found it very enjoyable and had a great time. A boat trip out to see the dolphins was excellent, you can also get a boat over to Morroco. Nightlife during the week was dull but livened up at the weekend. Excellent dutyfree shops, all perfume much cheaper than uk, designer goods, cigs and booze dirt cheap, well worth a visit just for the shops. There's a couple of sandy beaches, not many people on them but nice. The weather was fantastic. Tour Operator: none

This was one of the ports of call on a 6 night Med educational cruise that I was on. I found Gibraltar a great place for duty free bargains and there was plenty of shops to choose from. The majority of the people were English speaking. There was a lot of English type pubs and also plenty of fish and chip shops. Tour Operator: Ocean Village

I did not like Gibraltar. I thought it was boring. It did not help that the weather was quite frankly pants!! It was exactly like England. The monkeys were horrible and stole my sons wallet and mobile from his jacket. I would not recommend it to anyone!!

I found Gibraltar to be a good experience. We only spent half a day there and that's pretty much all you need. For about 18 dollars a tour guide will take you on a tour of everything you need to see, caverns, caves, through town, to the top of the rock where you have excellant views of Spain and Morrocco and all of Gibraltar. Also at the top of the rock are monkeys everywhere supposedly brought over by King Louis. Monkeys are friendly as long as you don't try and touch them, our tour guide had them crawl up on our shoulders. Made for some funny pictures. The only bad thing about Gibraltar was the currency. They use pounds so everything is very expensive. If your anywhere in southern Spain, def. check it out and take a cheap boat ride to Morrocco while you're there, something we didn't do, but wish we had!

Gibraltar is really only one street, Main Street. There you will find tacky Duty Free, Jewellers and Electrical goods shops.Thats it. If you venture out, you will find dirty streets, derelict houses and waste grounds. Okay for a couple of hours on a day trip, but not for a long stay.We will not be returning.
