Guatemala
The territory that makes up the modern country of Guatemala in South America was once the centre of the ancient Mayan civilisation. Today tourists flock to holiday in Guatemala to visit the ruins of the Mayan city of Tikal, to soak up the vibrant traditional culture and the legacy of Spanish colonialists, and to marvelmore

My wife and I went with a group to work with Habitat for Humanities in Xela (Quetzaltenango). The working part of our trip was primitive but we did have an opportunity to meet the people and explore Xela, a beautiful city in the highlands about 5 hours from Guatemala City. I can't say enough about the people. We experienced no hostility even though we were obviously Americans. They are friendly and courteous. When you walked on the streets they made eye contact and exchanged greetings. We spoke almost no Spanish and often went out to explore without an interpreter. We had no problems. It may be different in Guatemala City, but Xela is an unspoiled yet modern part of Guatemala that will win your heart. Armed guards at almost all businesses and banks remind you that you're not in Kansas. Your money goes a long way. We also stayed in Antiqua, which is a tourist city. It is beautiful and filled with shops and street vendors. My wife and I fell in love with Guatemala and hope to return. It is a beautiful, vibrant and alive third world country. Guatemala was my favourite country in Cental America with lovely people, amazing scenery and interesting out of the way places to see. And my favourite place in Guatemala was a remote mountain village called Todos Santos which is unspoilt by tourism and overwhelmingly friendly - our bus was met by some children who took us by the hand and implored us to stay with their family - the local tailor - we stayed in our own room and ate with them in the evening (all for about three dollars a day!). The men in the village all wear red pants, striped shirts and straw hats with ribbons and the Saturday market was a riot of colour.
