I loved this country! Budapest is rich with history and tradition, yet trendier than we thought it would be. The nightlife rocks, and the clubs are jumping with the young crowd. The food was surprisingly good, and we even got to meet some Hungarian porn stars--Sophie Moone and Stella Stevens!

Land of the Huns - Pushpa Kurup. Date of travel: Aug 2004
HUNGARY - LAND OF THE HUNS: Hungary lies at the very heart of Europe and the capital, Budapest is one of the most exotic cities in the world. The Danube (‘Duna’ to the locals) separates the twin cities of Buda and Pest and seven road bridges connect the two divided parts of the capital. Budapest is a tourist’s dream with thermal baths, luxury hotels, beautiful churches, spectacular museums, pubs and casinos, and an island in the middle of the river. There were trams on the streets of Budapest from 1887, a funicular railway from 1870, and Europe’s first underground Metro from 1896. Southwest of Budapest lies Lake Balaton, the largest lake in central Europe. A train journey around the lake is an exciting experience. You can see several buildings decorated with the red paprika for which Hungary is well known. Szentendre, an artists’ village on the Danube, north of Budapest, is a quaint place. We found exquisite wine-glasses, pottery, porcelain dolls and a variety of beautiful products at amazingly affordable prices. Don’t miss the famous Tokaji wine. Visegrad, further north on the Danube bend, is a historic site worth visiting. Located on a mountain top, the ancient citadel houses the royal insignia and presents a breath-taking view of the river. There are other interesting places like Eger, a town criss-crossed with wine cellars, Debrecen near the Romanian border, and Pecs in the south. English speakers are as rare as white elephants. I struggled with ‘Jo napot kivanok’ (good day) ‘igen, igen, igen’ (yes, yes, yes) and ‘nem, nem, nem’ (no, no, no) and ‘kozonom’ (thank you) , and finally gave up all hope of communicating. I decided to settle for the more primitive sign language. Tour Operator: None
