Lesotho - Jack. Date of travel: Jun 2008
I crossed over Sani Pass, which was spectacular. I ended up wandering off in the Drakensberg Mountains trying to get some solitude. Too many shepards around for that. Some kids invited me to their village. The chief declared that I stay for 5 days until a wedding. So I did. He made me. All sorts of strangeness with women proposing marriage, witch doctors, and a drunken aggressive wedding celebration in which I never saw the two getting married. I toured around the rest of Lesotho after that. Morija has a museum that was cool but not much else. Most of my time was spent with families that took me in for a day or two. The people were hospitable but had an edge of coldness and mistrust towards me and each other.
Pony-trekking in Lesotho - Helen Davies. Date of travel: Feb 2006
If you expect smart accommodation and fancy food, top of the range riding gear and powerful racehorses then a ponytrek in Lesotho is not for you!! What you will find is a warm welcome in every village, a friendly guide, strong and surefooted mountain ponies and exeptional scenery. Previous riding experience is not necessary, as most of the day your trusty steed will be negotiating steep ups and downs or walking along plateaus while you take in the views, not galloping wildly across grasslands - although there are oportunities like this for those who would like to. A pack horse (mule) comes along to carry all your gear and there are saddle bags for cameras, snacks etc.
