Mozambique - Quirimbas islands - HP. Date of travel: May 2007
In the north of Mozambique are the unspoilt, and largely undeveloped Querimba islands. One of the northern islands, Vamizi, has a lovely 12 bedroom lodge. The position is spectacular, pristine white beaches, untouched coral reef and great diving and deep sea fishing.

Well all I can say is that Mozambique was the best experience I've had in a long time...weather is fantastic, fishing is fabulous, people were extremely pleasant and very humble (makes SA look stupid) and always wanting to help where they can. Although it was a very long drive from Durban (and you definitely need a 4x4), it was very interesting to see how other African countries are...it took us 2 days to get there and then you can you only get to the lodge at low-tide! To all the fisherman out there....it's definitely a must!

We were a group of South Africans who travelled from JHB to Inhaca Island via Maputo. Maputo airport is tiny. We arrived in Maputo at about 10am and we were transferred to Rovuma Carlton for about 4 hours. Took a connecting flight to Inhaca Island on a small 20 seater plane. Had the fright of our lives when the plane took off and landed. (15 min flight). The lodge was not what we expected it to be. The food was good though. We took a ferry to Portuguese Islands which was very beautiful. Peaceful. We spent 2 nights and 3 days in Mozambique. For me the duration was just right as I got bored by the 3rd day. Not much to do on Inhaca Island. Locals always short change you, be careful when paying in Rands. You will get ripped off. Best to pay in US dollars or MZM meticals. Meticals are very confusing to deal with.

As a seasoned traveller in southern Africa Mozambique was always a potentialy interesting destination so 4 of us [adults] ventured via Joburg to Maputo for 1 night and then to the archipelago of islands further north at Indigo island. Stayed one night at the famous Polana hotel [very nice] which is on the fringe of the embassy district. The fun starts when you arrive at the airport and they confiscate your passports and leave you wondering what happens next. For 20 dollars [USA] you get issued a visa and it took 40 minutes whilst in full view of us the officials ate ther lunch and watched tv! Some encouragement needed on this point if they are to encourage larger tour operators. Then short hair raising ride with a driver who does not speak English to the hotel through streets with the worst squalor I have ever seen in all Africa! This is right by the airport and the first thing a visitor sees. Arrival at hotel is uneventful except the President was entertaining on the lawn and we had to go through a metal detector like western airports. Rather strange as it did not pick up my metal hip as usual , then my son noticed the machine was not plugged in! Africa ?! Nice stay, and now our onward trip back to fly north with an armed guard in the front of the hotel minibus sitting in the front with an AK 47 on his knee. Retraced our steps back through the squalor and rechecked onward uneventfully. Interesting enough we sat waiting in the room allocated and watched the activities on the runway. The presidents new 30 million dollar Dassault Falcon jet was parked waiting and the red carpet rolled out as he was loading up his entourage for a weekend foray in Cape Town . Enough material on this point to occupy Bob Geldof for years. The island resort of Indigo bay is delightful and worth the hassle of getting there. 4/5 star and not the standard of the best in southern africa but the service was good .Interesting island with lots of the locals very poor and reliant on fishing for a living. Aids just arrived but no deaths yet. Lots could be done to improve the infrastucture after the floods but much of the island unspoilt and the fishing is world class. Not for the faint in heart but a great adventure for the individuals wishing something different and the Mozambique people are a pleasant bunch who largely get on with life unlike some of ther neighbours. We will return. Richard BARNES. Tour Operator: Mozambique Tours
