Special and interesting - Harry & Bonita Parkin. Date of travel: Apr 2007
Period of visit was April/May 2007. Stayed with family in Muskat. We were fortunate enough to be able to vist a number of Wadis, an overnight stay in the desert plus a night camping at Turtle Beach. We found the town of Muskat very friendly and toured the Grand Mosque, the main harbour, fish market and the Souq. My wife and I are all too keen to visit Oman again as we feel we have not been to the tourist attractions in the country.

Oman is lovely - Mel Hoffman. Date of travel: May 2006
I loved Oman, despite the heat, which is overpowering. There is not much to do, so you will just have to relax with your book at the beach. There a some souks which offer you the ususal tourist wares, but it's nice to get some incense, francinsense etc. People are friendly but seem to stick to themselves, not ignoring you but also not paying too much attention to you. I loved the Arabian teas they serve, spiced up teas, very interesting. There is a brand new Shangri La hotel, we went there for a drink. It is so modern elaborate, I swear I thought I was in a London club. They have this cocktail bar which is highly airconditioned, frozen iced glasses and any drink you could imagine. The music was top notch Club House music, and the whole thing was a little bizarre, but great. By the way, the prices were more than a London club!

Cheating at Oman Seeb airport - Fakhruddin. Date of travel: Feb 2006
There is only one company which is operating exchange counter at Seeb International airport. I exchanged 500 USD Travellers Cheques and was handed 168.9 RO after a deduction of 2 RO as commission. In the city any exchange gives you 190 RO for 500 USD. I was cheated by the airport exchange counter of almost 22 RO. This is an atrocious thing that Omani government is allowing a single company to loot unwary travellers at the airport.

You must visit! - John Wilson. Date of travel: Apr 2005
I can't believe one comment on this site that said there is nothing to do in Oman!! What a wasted opportunity. There are the wonderful wadis to explore - some only an hour or so out of Muscat (try Snake Pass for an unfogettable drive/hike combination). Slightly further afield along the coast toward Sur you will find idyllic oasis, with underground lakes, devoid of all tourists. You need to know where to look. A little beyond Snake Pass (if you have the bottle to continue!) you'll find the most amazing mountain village with terraced crops. The hot springs and the irrigation system nearby are also fascinating visits. Go to Jebel Akhtar - the Grand Canyon of the Middle East. I almost came face to face with a huge bird as tall as me! Don't know its name but it had droppings the size of a St Bernard! Some of the forts have also been tastefull restored, but in my view that can take away some of the mystique. Try if you can to get a peek inside the fort a Jalan bani bu Ali - look carefully and you'll still find catridges from old Enfield rifles. Look a little deeper into the history and you'll find how the British had a major military campaign in this area (defeated and then retrned to extract revenge!) and how until quite recently neighbouring villages used to fight each other. A result of this fighting can be seen in the shape of a deserted village near Nizwa (sorry can't remember name). Fascinated trip around a quite extensive (but destroyed village) complete with underground water supply sytem. Another very short trip out of Muscat is Fanja. Nothing great but worth a climb to the top of the hill (see photo).
