This riverboat cruise commenced in St Petersburg and ended 2 weeks later in Moscow, after cruising various rivers, lakes, canals and reservoirs in central Russia. We visited many cities, towns and villages along the way. St Petersburg is stunningly beautiful and the typical Russian queues were well worth tolerating in order to see all the sights. We had three days there and when the boat finally set sail for Moscow we actually felt a little sad to be leaving. The trip itself was marvellous, great weather, wonderful scenery and fascinating towns and villages to visit along the way. We particularly liked the town of Yaroslavl on the Volga and, again, felt a little sad to leave there as well. Moscow was by no means the drab and dreary city that I had imagined ... it is quite beautiful ... but extremely busy and noisy! The traffic conditions and the type of driving experienced in Moscow have to be seen to be believed! It is apparent that there is only ONE traffic rule in Russia ... "There are NO rules"! I have been a professional driver for over 40 years, but I would never choose to drive in Moscow. Relative poverty, especially in rural Russia, is a tragic thing to see but the people generally are friendly and helpful. Russian beaurocracy is everything you have read about ... and more. Quite simply, do your homework, have everything ready at hand and go with the flow. Don't argue, don't complain and don't expect a smile or coutesy from officialdom ... then you will have a fairly smooth visit! We shall go again ... a great experience.
