A little landlocked country in central Europe, Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia before gaining independence in 1993. Being just a hop and a skip from Vienna, capital of Austria, it is easy to include a short holiday in Slovakia in a European tour. The reward is discovering a country of great natural beauty, the Tratramore Mountains providing great skiing and hiking, and the lowlands crammed with quaint villages and remote medieval castles. A major attraction is the spa resort on the geo-thermal lake in Poprad.
