I spent 6 days exploring Luanda, the capital city of Angola. Angola, and Luanda in particular does not have the best reputation but we found it to be a welcoming and friendly place. Despite speaking no Portuguese we found the locals curious and engaging and willing to point us in the right direction. The highlights were the golden sand beaches on the western peninsula within 15 minutes of the city. These are easily reached using the slightly dilapidated but effective taxi vans that are a mainstay in most African cities. There is a large mixture of European and local restaurants and bars, mostly in the central city and along the beachfronts serving an array of fresh seafood. The local yacht club has a fantastic restaurant with dazzling views across the bay into the city, at night you could be forgiven for thinking you are in New York. It also has a sports bar attached if you are looking for something a little less formal. Angola does not deserve its reputation, it is a beautiful country with much to offer and I would recommend visiting when you get the chance.
