While visiting Gaborone make sure to stop by the Green Shop for a unique shopping experience as it is housed in a traditional hut, a rare sight to see within the bustling city of Gaborone. The shop is located in the Eco-Park of Somarelang Tikologo (Environment Watch Botswana) which is an NGO dedicated to creating awareness about environmental planning, resource conservation and waste management through community projects and demonstrations. All merchandise sold in the Green Shop is made from recycled or natural products crafted from local women and out of school youth groups and range from skin care products and accessories to home furnishings. Shopping at the Green Shop will show your support for Botswana’s environment and contribute to the economic development of our suppliers.

The place to go in Gaborone is definitely the Bull and Bush - a huge indoor/outdoor dining area with a bar, big screen TV and delicious food; the steaks melted in our mouths. Full of expats and well-to-do locals.

I visited Gaborone in Sep 04 and was totally wowed by the place. For game viewing, there's no doubt that Mokolodi gives you the best chance for seeing some of the more impressive wildlife - drinks by the lake at sunset in the company of a giraffe, a very cute little deer, two rhinos and two hippos just can't be beaten! There is also a game reserve in Gaborone itself, with lots of warthog, ostriches and some very excitable monkeys. A 4-hour drive south from Gaborone gets you across the border into South Africa where there is a fabulous game reserve called Madikwe. There are some very reasonable lodges here and the rangers will take you on an evening game drive. This was the highlight of my wildlife spotting - lions and elephants here which is an absolutely awe-inspiring sight! Gaborone itself offers an interesting African experience. The ex-pats tend to stay together and they can be found in the shopping malls, bars and restaurants that have sprung up all over the city. To get to 'real' Africa though, visit the National Museum and the older part of the city. Gabs is great. Loved it so much I'm going back in March 06!
