I would like to congratulate you for your website, which has helped me on several occasions in my business travels around the globe. I was reading for the first time the pages related to my home country -France- today and would like to share with you a couple of comments related to the Basque Country section. Lourdes, and the Haute-Pyrenées area, do not belong to the Basque Country itself. The Lourdes area is named Bigorre and its population used to speak "Occitan" with some local variations. This language is latin-based and related to Gascon, Provencal and Catalan regional languages. As you mention, the city of Pau is the main settlement of an area called "Béarn", also speaking a local variation of "Occitan". Although these local languages are not widely spoken today, being wiped out by 50 years of television and French schools, they are not related to Euskara, or Basque language at all. I am not sure my relatives living in the area would appreciate being compared to Basque people ! (Friendly) rivalry between Bayonne and Pau or more generally between the Basque and the Bearn areas of the Pyrenees-Atlantiques "département" exists for hundreds of years.
