Brittany
Back in days of yore a group of Celts crossed the sea from Britain to settle on a lump of land on the coast of north-west France, transplanting their language and culture onto this section of rocky coastline and the adjacent interior. The mystery and magic of the Celtic heritage still pervades this corner ofmore

If you visit this area I can recommend - Cognac, la Rochelle, both for culture and for sightseeing. There's lots at both for all ages. Obviously the major brandy makers are there in the town, but don't forget to visit the lesser known producers where quality and the experience of tasting an array of products can be had - The major cognac producers can be expensive and charge for their wares. La Rochelle is steeped in history and a shopping trip there with mid afternoon lunch is a must. Tour Operator: Eurocamp

Stoned in Brittany
Carnac, in Brittany, is one of the high places of megalithic culture. The great standing stone alignments are to Brittany what Stonehenge is to prehistoric England. I first visited this as a very young child and there is somewhere a picture of me sitting on a megalith aged about four. Nowadays though, a visit to Carnac is rather different, as the menhirs (a Breton word for standing stone) cannot be approached most of the time, due to the huge numbers of visitors to this site who had started to endanger the soil around the monuments. The Morbihan area is particularly rich in megalithic structures, and around Carnac itself, there are many outstanding monuments to visit such as the amazing sculpted cairn at Gavrinis or the megalithic ensemble at Locmariaquer which comprises two tumuli (covered tombs) and a massive standing stone which before it was broken measured 20 metres (64 ft) and weighed almost 350t. You could if you so wished organise to have a megalithic day and take in a few of these amazing sights.

Just lie back, soak up the marvellous views in Brittany, and forget that only a few hours away life, work and stress continue unabated. A trip to France's western tip proves the ideal location to simply rediscover what life should be about. I was sitting (well lying) on the third tee of Geoff and Jane's pitch-and-putt course contemplating the view from this spot on the coast, just down the road from Plestin-les-Greves, cool drink in one hand and a large salad bagette in the other. To the left lay Locquirec with its Chi-Chi beach and very swish Hotel Des Grand Bains. To my right and round a bit was the visually fascinating Pink Granite Coast, with Perros Guirec at its centre. Brittany, bathed in glorious sunshine, I concluded, never looked better. Beaches are sandy, sheltered, clean, and have the added benefit of some smashing rock pools. And a resident seal. Between our holiday house and the beach was the coastal path. Well signed and well- maintained, this made for an exhilarating change of pace. Heading one way, we discovered the well preserved remains of what had been a Roman hot baths complex. My two intrepid explorers loved it and to be honest so did I. Obviously the Romans also certainly knew a great location when they saw one. Food and drink Breton style is of the hearty variety. Wine flows freely everywhere, of course, but on a warm day you can't beat supping some local Breton cider, served up in traditional china cups. Everywhere there is seafood but Brittany offers other culinary delights. There are the crepes of every sweet and savoury variety, for starters. Or mains. And their cakes, produced using a serious overdose of butter and sugar, are the stuff of culinary heaven.

My wife and I believe the best way to see and experience the countryside is on foot, and we spend all our holidays walking. Our favourite walks are in Brittany, where it is possible to explore old corsair towns like Saint-Malo, or, best of all, get away from it all on cliffside paths or wild spots. We have been several times to the loveliest walker’s paradise of all, the charming island of Brehat, full of flowers and birds. There are maps and descriptions of many walks in Brittany to be had online at Bretagne.com. You can print these out and on the same site find out lots of useful information about this lovely part of the world.
