Maui
The Polynesian gods certainly smiled on the Hawaiian island of Maui, blessing it with all the trappings for an idyllic Pacific dream holiday. Brilliant tropical fish dart around the offshore reefs, magnificent beaches encircle the coast, and lush rain forests run up to the slopes of the towering dominant dormant volcano of Haleakala. Even the locals will tell you Maui is VERY expensive vacationing. It has some of the best shopping you can find, if that's your thing. If you're on a travel budget or travelling in a large group (there were 10 of us) you should hit the Costco on your way from the airport. Even buying a membership will save you in the end. There are activities for every taste and every budget. If you choose to go snorkeling you may want to hit the Maui Dive Shop (Whalers Village, Shops at Wailea, or see online for more locations) and rent your gear from there- you'll get personal assistance, and you won't be subjected to the crummy loaner equipment that your tour provides. Molokini is fantastic, and you'll usually get to do a second location as well. Some of the attractions are a little hokey- Don't bother with the Sugar Cane Train... 20 bucks a head for a ride along the highway and through a golf course... Accommodations are USUALLY found to be as advertised, but we discovered that private vacation rentals don't always deliver as promised. We stayed in a pretty scuzzy privately owned condo that was a serious blemish on the resort it was in. We're still waiting on a reply from the management company before I start mentioning names. Dining- Buy Costco and eat in... but if you're dying for some local fare, try the "Old Lahaina Luau", and Buzz's Wharf. Some of the restaraunts in Whaler's Village are really great too. The Maui Ocean Center is a great place for kids of all ages. So here's a snapshot of where our money went. Pacific Whale Foundation -snorkel tour to Molokini and Lanaii Maui Dive Shop- Gear and Advice Maui Wave Riders- Surf Lessons Costco- Groceries Safeway- Groceries (1.12 lb Bananas, no kidding) ABC Stores- Cheap Kids Floaties and stuff Old Lahaina Luau- FANTASTIC food, entertainment Buzz's Wharf- Sweet Tahitian Prawns... ohhhh yeahhhh Maui Ocean Center- Great sea life experience Whaler's Village- General shopping Shops at Wailea- Very POSH shopping And Mahalo to the locals who made our visit fun, friendly and memorable!
