UDAIPUR HOLIDAY REVIEWS

It has been called the “Venice of the East”, which is no great exaggeration because the romantic Indian city of Udaipur, built around Lake Pechola in the state of Rajasthan, has a certain watery charm beneath the turrets of its City Palace. Lovely city. A highlight was an invite to a Moslem wedding! Procession through the street, gala music and dancing en route, and a wonderfully interesting ceremony and food upon arrival at the wedding hall.

Udaipur was my favourite place in India - its relatively hassle free, certainly compared to Agra, and is packed with little treasures. We stayed in the Trident Hotel on the outskirts. It's very comfortable but lacks charm. It's a bit like a posh holiday inn. If you can afford it stay in the Lake Palace hotel, on an island in Lake Pichola. Or in the City Palace hotel on the edge of the lake in central Udaipur. The City Palace has a great restaurant but book in advance. The town is well worth wandering around, you'll find markets where piles of spices and fruits are on display and the people very friendly. Tour Operator: independent
