Varanasi
Anyone caught up in the maelstrom of modern life will be soothed by a holiday in Varanasi, the holy Indian city on the Ganges River where Hindu pilgrims come in search of Nirvana (a state of grace) and to scatter the ashes of their cremated loved ones from the ghats (landings) on the river bank.more
Absolutely loved Varanasi - Robert Darby. Date of travel: May 2006
Absolutely loved Varanasi - a heady mixture of both good and terrible sights, sounds and smells that are hard to forget. It’s the holiest city (the Ganges River cleanses all sin), but also the filthiest – public ablutions by man and beast alike. The burning ghats are fascinating – the remains are thrown into the river, although those doing a boat trip may be unlucky enough to bump into body fragments or bloated cows along with a variety of other rubbish floating down the holy river, while the people on the riverbanks merrily bathe, brush teeth, drink and sprinkle the holy water over themselves – make sure you keep your mouth shut when showering!! The boat trips on the Ganges River are a little hard sell, but worth doing, especially at dawn or dusk. Lots of really good food around, and the place is a photographer’s dream.
