Java
Most visitors to Indonesia start their holiday in Java, flying in to the international airport near the country’s rather dirty, oppressing capital, Jakarta. Beyond the overcrowded city in the north-west, Java offers some oases of beauty, overshadowed by a volcanic mountain range, which has earned it the moniker of “Garden of the East”. more
Jakarta - Alex Loeb. Date of travel: Nov 2008
My god, what a terrible place. Although I hear the rich and famous can really live it up here I think the average traveler will be very disappointed. I spent the first few nights in the grim backpacker area Jalan Jaksa before I had to vacate to more civilized accommodation. Although cheap, my room consisted of one dirty bed....that's it. Jalan Jaksa has a couple bars fun enough to drink in and was filled with travel agencies able to let me leave fast enough but that is about it. The city sprawls as far as the eye can see, which, here, isn't far because of the smog. With the sprawl is a lack of city center making different and slightly distinct areas of the city but no city center or downtown and no real district worth walking around in. The most historic area is an unimpressive small collection of Dutch colonial houses near the water but not worth the visit. I have had to make Jakarta my stop over three times and after each one I leave feeling like a need a shower.
