Rome
In Rome a great empire and the Catholic Church was founded. The Church remains, based in the glorious Vatican City, and relics of the ancient Empire still thrill the thousands who flock to holiday in Rome, dodging crazy traffic and licking delicious ice-creams as they try to cram in all the sights and sounds ofmore
Rome - Andy. Date of travel: Mar 2009
Rome has much to offer to all travellers, whether you're seeking archaeological wonders, amazing shopping deals, or a romantic adventure.
Like young Romans do... - Silvia. Date of travel: Oct 2008
Do you want to spend a night like young Romans do? Go get lost in the tangled little streets of Trastevere. It is one of the most genuine and alive areas in town. Start your special night in the late afternoon with an Aperitivo at “Freni e Frizioni” just off Piazza Trilussa, where beautiful people enjoy the weather sipping lovely mojitos. Then go for a typical roman pizza (thin and crunchy) at “Dar poeta”, Vicolo del Bologna. After a gratifying “gelato” (ice cream) you will be ready to continue your stroll among little cosy bars and unique boutiques.
A one-day tour of Rome - John H Mueller. Date of travel: Sep 2008
Rome in a couple of days. Probably can’t be done, but my wife and I gave it a try in September, 2008. We devoted one day to a personalized tour with Luca Di Trapano, a tour coordinator in Rome. And this day was the highlight of our vacation. The tour covered a lot of the standard tourist targets. We began with ancient Rome - the Colosseum, the forum, the circus maximus, the other places of antiquity - and ended it with the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, St Peter’s Basilica, with a lot of stops in between. These included the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Victor Emmanuel Monument, among others. And a trip to the Gianicolo Hill for panoramic views of Rome. What really made this day special, was Luca’s almost limitless knowledge of the history, the politics, the art, the whatever of Rome. He seemed to know it all. Luca is young, handsome, and personable, and, if that isn’t enough, he not only loves opera (especially Verdi and Puccini on the CD player), he sings it as well. Beautifully.
We loved Rome - Dirk and Esther Huigen. Date of travel: May 2008
In a few sentences, we loved Rome for its cultural-historical value. But Rome is still a big filthy city with a lot of pollution and bad smells. But The buildings and churches and sights we visited, like the St. Pietro and the Vatican, Forum Romano etc etc were wonderful! The buses and train were okay. We took a lovely pizza or pasta in small restaurants, I don't remember which ones, but I guess the city is loaded with good places to eat. The ice-creams are the best of the world. We'd love to visit Rome again!
Ripped off by Green Line - Linda Novak. Date of travel: May 2008
We were ripped off by Green Line Tours. They advertise a list of places that the buses stop and then after we have paid and are on the bus we are informed that they can't stop at the Colosseo and a couple of other promised stops. Also the headsets have short cords so that you can not sit up properly when wearing them. And the verbal tour is insufficient. Many interesting places were not mentioned. It was a terrible city tour.

Roma
Our tour operator made our trip to Italy so enjoyable. Everything about this tour company is perfect. They pick you up right from the air port in a Mercedes and then escort you to your destination, whether it be another Italian city or your hotel. The tour guide spoke great English and was so educated about all the cites we saw. We used them for 3 tours, the Rome Tour, the Almafi Coast tour, and the Florence tour! We saw everything and enjoyed every minute of it. The tours were tailored to what we wanted to see and were private so the guides focus was on satisfying our specific needs! The tours were all fairly priced and I don't know how else we could have seen Italy if we weren't on these tours. Rome is a beautiful city, and Italy is a beautiful country, but it is impossible to see everything, our tour operator allowed us to see the most things with our little amount of time! Rome with Bestourofitaly, com - Dana. Date of travel: Mar 2008
Rome with Bestourofitaly,com
Our tour operatorgave us the best tour I have ever been on! Our tour guide was beautiful and almost fluent in English! He picked us up from the airport in Rome in a beautiful Mercedes and started giving us a tour of Rome as soon as we were on the road. We booked 4 different tours with this company and they were all amazing. I couldn't imagine seeing Italy any other way. The first tour we did was the Best of Rome tour. We saw everything and learned so much. That night we did the Rome by Night tour. This was my favorite thing I did in Italy. Our tour guide brought us to this very private area that overlooked the entire city and then provided us with some wine! (on the house) It was so intimate and perfect. The following day we did the Vatican Tour. I will warn everyone, do not do the Vatican without a tour, it is huge and you won’t know what you are looking at without an educated tour guide! The following day we took the Florence/Tuscany/ Pisa tour. Again our tour operator set up a private wine tasting for us and chauffeured us around in a beautiful Mercedes so we were comfortable and able to see everything as though we were VIP! The tour was reasonably priced and made our trip so amazing. I loved our tour guide and really appreciated all the extras that besttourofitaly.com provided, like great economical places to eat, tours of private spots that most tour companies wouldn't take you, and best of all it was private, we weren't with 30 other people fighting for the attention of our tour guide! A city of wonder, beauty and lunatics - Karl Carroll. Date of travel: Jan 2008
The main thing about Rome is the sights and sounds. The Vatican is a must and on Sunday the Pope addresses the crowd at midday, however be aware that the Sistine chapel is closed on Sundays so a return will be needed. The collosseum is an awesome sight, but again, visting hours are strange. They change every month and in January it closes at 3.30pm much to our disgust. The police are very visible in a friendly and non threatening manner so don't be afraid to approach them and ask for help, directions, etc. Other than that they appear to let people get on with their lives which appears to work minus the two problems mentioned below. There are simply too many places to eat and dine but tourists beware, they will rip you off especially close to tourist locations. Go to the old city for genuine Italian pizza at an excellent price (20 euro for both of us including drinks). As for ice-cream, there's only one place, Delas Palma at the Pantheon. Again a great price for the best ice-cream the world can offer and more flavours than can be counted. Now for the minus which were small. The first problem in Rome is graffiti, it's everywhere and reminds me off New York at its worst but they appear to have left the historical sites alone. Also, do not drive in Rome and I would avoid the taxis. They are very expensive and not needed as the Metro is a very efficient and user friendly service. Mixed with some walking (which is unavoidable if you're sight seeing) the Metro leaves taxis obsolete. Besides, there appears to be no traffic law or enforcement in Rome and even crossing the road using a green man is dangerous as they will ignore the lights at every opportunity. None of the police seem concerned about this either. Lastly, where to stay. I can recommend the Best Western, Globus. Excellent price for a magnificent room and the staff are fantastic. Thanks to the Metro its location makes no difference as the nearest stop is only 200 metres away and connects to the sites and airports including Ryanair's Le Campino.
Tour to Milvio Bridge – Rome - Misty. Date of travel: Jan 2008
I visited Rome with my friends and visit the Milvio bridge, Olympic Stadium and Foro Italico, Flaminio Stadium, Auditorium Park Music, Farnesina. All these places are memorable
Great for sightseeing - Dave and Marion. Date of travel: Feb 2006
We went for a 4 day short break to Rome. We went on the city tour sightseeing hop on and hop off bus which was disappointing, the commentary was poor and headphones did not work half the time. There is loads to see in the city and best way to view it is on foot so be prepared for plenty of walking. The Coliseum was excellent, The Vatican is a must and much larger than we imagined. Go on a Sunday as the Pope appears on the balcony at mid day. The Sistine Chapel is really worth a visit but expect long queues and big crowds. The Trevi fountain is great but you are pestered by people trying to sell you tack and beware of pick pockets here as you can get jostled. The Spanish Steps were a waste of time. other sites worth visiting are the Pantheon, the Bastillica of San Marco, Santa Maria Maggiore and Piazza Navona. Eating out in Rome can be very expensive especially near the the main tourist sites. if you look around you can find some really traditional Italian restaurants reasonable priced and 2 we can recommend are are Giovannis Trattoria and Ristorante Giuseppi Brisi both in Villa Filippo. Solitude in the Ruins - Emily Wray. Date of travel: Aug 2005
I went to Italy by myself for the first time as a way to get over my failed engagement LOL. My favorite memory, other than having far too much red wine in the middle of the afternoon 2 hours after getting to Rome in August, was sitting on a balcony overlooking the ruins at night watching the moon rise while listening to the soundtrack of "The Talented Mr. Ripley".
