I have travelled a great deal and found Almaty, Kazakhstan to be one of my most enjoyable trips. Forget all that bumbling Borat stuff. This is a fabulous beautiful country with incredible food. We have "organic". They have old fashioned farm raised lamb and duck. Their food benefits from the fresh and properly raised ingredients. The mountains are a short trip from the city for some incredible hiking, skiing, or boarding. If you were into mountain biking, this woiuld be awesome too. It is only about 20 minutes from Almaty to the highest mountain peak. I know this sounds crazy to many Americans, but this really is a great trip.
