• THE COAST HOLIDAY REVIEWS

The Coast
Exploited by Arab traders of old, and colonized by Portugal in the Middle Ages, the Kenyan coast and its busy port city of Mombasa is littered with relics of these visitors. It is the magnificent beaches and coral marine parks that draw thousands of package tourists to holiday on the coast of Kenya though, relaxingmore

Turtle Bay Beach, Kenya - Martin Day. Date of travel: Oct 2003
Turtle Bay Beach Club is about 70 miles north of Mombassa, so you don't get any of the problems that you normally get in the Mombassa area. The nearest large town is Malindi, which is about 10 miles further north. TBBC is located in a small town called Watamu, which is a very cosmopolitan place, a real mixture of peoples of all backgrounds, colours, religions. The coast at this point is actually part of the Kenyan Marine National Park, so there is fantasic scuba diving and snorkling just offshore. Swimming in the sea is like taking a warm bath!! Plenty of other things to do in the area. Mida Creek at the back of Watamu, is one of the best places for bird watching in Kenya. I'm not into bird watching, but you cannot fail to be impressed by a Sea Eagle in full flight or when it dives to catch a fish. Or just lay back and enjoy a pleasant Dhow Cruise around the Creek. Nearby is the town of Gedi, this has an ancient ruined town that was overgrown by the bush, only rediscovered in the early 20th century. The place is very spookey, especially around sunset. Lots of wild monkeys running around, its extremely atmospheric. Nearby, is a very well kept secret, the Spirit Caves, you will not find these in any of the tourist guides or on the list of official trips. These caves are vast, they are used by the locals for Voodo practises. They actually carry out live sacrifices of small animals here, they try and put good luck or bad luck on other people. It does not sound very nice, but it is without doubt one of the most simple and atmospheric places I have ever been. Generally there is plenty to do around the area, great walking, bird watching, horse riding, deep sea fishing. Or you can easily go on a Safari to anywhere in Kenya or Tanzania. We like the place so much that we have been back many times. Its like a home from home. You won't be disappointed. If you prefer a more upmarket Hotel, then just along the beach is Hemmingways. PS: Only a two or Three Hour time difference, so no Jet Lag.
