Vientiane
Exploring the capital of Laos, Vientiane, on foot, visitors will find a plethora of temples, pagodas and shrines, all of which add to the peaceful, contemplative atmosphere of this little Asian city on the banks of the sluggish Mekong River. Because of the French colonial influence, on holiday in Vientiane you can sup on noodlesmore

Get me out - Alex Loeb. Date of travel: Nov 2005
I stayed for exactly 8 hours in this dusty capitol and excluding the ten minutes drinking Beer Lao, which was pure heaven, it was 8 hours too long. The place is a write off, just use it to go to the beautiful destinations surrounding the rest of the country.
Vientiane Water Festival - Don and Jenny. Date of travel: Oct 2004
A very interesting time to be in Vientiane - lots of activity on the Mekong River. We watched long boat races with crews of about 40, and wanna-be-rower kids practicing seriously on the riverbanks. The festival also entailed the sending off of floating candle lanterns with incense at night down the Mekong River in respect of the river gods, accompanied by prayers and supplications. Little boys were hired to swim out and push off the lanterns downriver (but often a mistimed kick turned the lanterns over or put them out!!). We enjoyed our take-away meals that came in a variety of plastic bags, including purple juice in a bag with ice, a straw, and a ribbon handle!
