Fez
The oldest part of the buzzing city of Fez dates back to the 10th Century, while the modern section, Ville Nouvelle, shows the graceful influence of French colonialism. In the ancient Medina life goes on in the narrow alleyways much as it did in medieval times, the air pervaded with the stench of the tanneries.more

Can see it all in 2 days - Maybeme. Date of travel: Oct 2007
Fez is a tour town and once you have experienced the filth and stench of the medina and the few Mosques which you cannot enter the trip is effectively over. Meknes and Casablanca, Volubilis and other towns have to be included in your trip or it's a waste of time. Two days in Fez is more than enough.

If you want culture then it's Fez. People are wonderful and its cheap to stay in the guest house, which are springing up. If you book into guest house the manager will organise everything. Wonderful!
Spiritual Fez - Afsha Malik. Date of travel: Nov 2006
Fez, a interesting city. I found the mosques very spiritual and peaceful and pretty much never empty. The city of Meknes was a pleasant stop over on our way back from visiting Mowla idrees kabir. Weather was nice, sunny with a breeze. I did not find it very touristy, which I was pleased about. There wasnt a great deal of shopping to be done. The city seemed very poor and reminded me to thank God for all we have. We stayed 7days which was probably a little too long. I think 3-4 days and then moving on would have been a beter idea.

Fez was definitely my favourite place in Morocco – much more authentic and Moroccan-like than Marrakech. The souks were fantastic, filled with more local people and hardworking donkeys than tourists and with a huge variety of things to buy, not just stall after stall filled with tourist-orientated crafts. The tanneries were fascinating; and yes they smell, but are not nearly as bad as people make them out to be! I was also prepared for a lot of hassle as well as a full-on assault of young men wanting to be my guide in the old city, but it never really happened – I had a few people coming up to me, but all I had to do was say no and off they went – even the shopkeepers weren’t totally hard-sell; a smile with a “no thanks was generally enough.
