• THE NAMIB DESERT HOLIDAY REVIEWS

The Namib Desert
A vast expanse of arid, barren landscape might not sound very attractive, but a holiday in the Namib Desert is a memorable experience for any traveller awed by the wonders of nature. The Skeleton Coast in the north is often blanketed in thick fog through which loom the “bones” of the many ships that havemore
Camp at Sesriem - Chris Arendse. Date of travel: Jul 2006
If you want to get to Sossusvlei as early as you can in the morning, your best bet is to camp at Sesriem, which is the closest accommodation to the dunes. The campsite is small, and they are always fully booked, but they have an overflow area so don't be discouraged if you can't book a place. Reservations people will always tell you they are full and you can't camp, but if you go they cannot turn you away; there is plenty of space. The only problem they have is with the amount of ablution facilities - there will probably be a queue for the showers, and there will probably not be any hot water by the time you get to them!
Sossusvlei - Mandy Snyman. Date of travel: Jun 2006
The dunes at Sossusvlei form some of the most spectacular scenery on earth! It is well worth the effort to drive in from Sesriem as soon as the gates open in the morning to be among the dunes as the sun rises - definitely climb a large dune (the Sossusvlei dune is great, better than Dune 45) where the shadows and sand textures, crisp edges and incredible scenery can be marvelled at. The short walk to Dead vlei is also worth it, especially for photo enthusiasts. For sunset, drive the short distance to Elim Dune to take in the glorious colours of the surrounding landscape.
