We spent a week touring the top of the South Island in a Campervan. The scenery was beautiful, the weather was beautiful and the price of the trip was even better. Campervans are incredibly cheap over the winter off peak months and give you so much freedom. Highlights included Sea Kayaking in the Tasman Bay, getting up close to seals on a secluded West Coast beach, beautiful sunsets and sun rises and peace and quiet. Firstly go to Queenstown, it has a great vibe and you can do any kind of activity there. Wanaka was also a very cool spot and is close by. Its much quieter than Queenstown, but is very pretty and they have the best cinema you've ever seen. The chairs are all odd bits of furniture with comfy armchairs and couches all arranged in normal cinema-style rows. It was difficult not to fall asleep slumped in an armchair! There is even a yellow Morris Minor car on the side to sit in for the drive-in experience! At interval you can buy hot homemade biscuits and every film is introduced by the owner in the old-fashioned way. Very cool.

The best way to tour the Marlborough winelands is by bicycle. I stayed in the little town of Renwick in the heart of the vineyards at the friendly Watson's Way backpackers - hired a bike from them and pedalled around to the different wine farms for some tastings. The people were all very friendly and chatty. Was also allowed to have my picnic at their tables with some wine - great!
