Arequipa
Peru’s most attractive city, Arequipa sparkles in the sun, built from a light-coloured volcanic stone. Spanish colonial buildings, now museums and galleries, fill the old town centre around gardens of the Plaza de Armas. A must-see is the self-contained 16th Century Santa Catalina Convent. A brilliant trip from Arequipa is to the Colca Canyon. You can take a day tour, but we decided to go our own way for a few days, stopping in Chivay en route for the night to get more of a feel for the area. Took a local bus, which is always more of a challenge but more fun. We started early the next morning to the condor lookout on the rim of the canyon to wait for the condors to circle, but unfortunately only saw them in the distance and were surrounded by souvenir sellers instead. Most tourist tours take you to the lookout to see them and then return to Arequipa, but we wanted to see more of the canyon so we had brought our hiking gear and followed a trail down into the depths. Scenery was unbelievable. Spent a few days hiking along the bottom and camped in the gardens of the local people when invited. Even though the climb out was still to come I would fully recommend anyone to do this - it is something way off the beaten track and is a taste of the real Peru - a wonderful experience.

Arequipa a very beautiful city with an incredible convent/monastery - Santa Catalina. Couldn't believe how interesting I found it! Took many stunning photos inside what they describe as a city within a city - lots of different colored walls and courtyards, fountains, cobbled lanes.
