Fascinating - Guy Hands. Date of travel: Jun 2006
However exciting the film was, the idea of going on a zulu battlefield tour really didnt excite me, and even less so my wife. But everyone had said how brilliant it was so we booked a couple of nights in David Ratrays Fugitives Drift. The drive there is wonderful, you really feed like you're in Africa, dirt roads, little villiage with round mud huts and thatch roofs and smiling children. We did battlefield tours of both Isandlwana (where the British got massacred) and Rorke’s Drift (where the Zulus did). David Ratray and his other tour guides are superb storytellers, making the history of that day come alive. You learn in gripping details of the bravery of the Zulu army that defeated the British, on the Day of the Dead Moon and at sunset listen the famous story of Rorke’s Drift, where a handful of British soldiers were attacked by 4,000 Zulu warriors, winning more Victoria Crosses than in any other battle in history. It really is worth the trip.
