Where are the gardens? - Frank Dare. Date of travel: Oct 2007
The Garden Route is a great excursion from Cape Town, but you'll need a few free days to make it worthwhile. The Garden route starts at Mossel Bay (about 4 hours from Cape Town) and extends along the coast to beyond Plettenberg Bay. It includes George (where you can fly to), Knysna and a few other small beach communities including Victoria Bay, Herods Bay and Wilderness. The whole area is very beautiful but don’t expect to see any gardens – it varies from rolling farmland to lush forests, lagoons, and long empty beaches. Knysna is stunning, with its large lagoon and great restaurants, golf courses and relaxed atmosphere. Many South Africans have holiday homes in Plett and it gets busy at Christmas and Easter when the place comes alive and the bars and nightspots get packed. The town itself is not that nice, but it is set on a wonderful long empty beach and is a great destination for families – there is lots to do for children. There are polo touraments here at Christmas and Easter at Kurland Park, 20 minutes from the centre of Plett toward Port Elizabeth. We rented a house outside Plett on Keurbooms beach which is much less crowded and totally unspoilt. I suggest missing out George and Mossel Bay, which is a small industrial town.

South Africa rocks! - The Bouncer. Date of travel: Mar 2004
South Africa rocks! I was a bit worried about tackling it as a backpacker, having heard bad stories about crime and so on from Saffers in London but I had an amazing time travelling along the Garden Route on the Bazz Bus and ending up in Jeffreys Bay to ride the perfect wave. Its a beautiful country with beautiful people and I am going back one day to look up all my friends there.
