Castries
The modern tourist port of Castries, capital of the island of St Lucia, provides a day of frenetic holiday fun for thousands of cruise ship passengers and a good living for traditionally-clad locals who welcome them, and their credit cards, to the colourful market and duty-free shopping malls. Very unhappy with St. Lucia - cg7685. Date of travel: Sep 2010
We visited Castries while on a cruise, so we were there for a day only and that was enough for us to never want to come there again. We didn't sign up for an excursion but wanted to see the city on our own but that didn't really happen. Right off the ship we were ambushed by taxi drivers offering to take us places, the prices were ridiculous with $25 per person! We walked on but every 10 feet a new driver would literally stalk us, it was very unpleasant as they wouldn't understand "No, thank you." The further away we were from the pier the less did the drivers charge, now it was $15 pp but still we thought it was too much. We really didn't feel like seeing Castries on our own anymore and just wanted to escape to a beach. We met a random couple from the ship who wanted to go up to Gros Islet/Rodney Bay area beach and it was only $10 per person back and forth. The beach was nice but nothing extraordinary. At the beach vendors came up to us and really annoyed us, it felt a bit unsafe too. The minute we returned to the ship we left as we didn't want to deal with this island's people anymore.
