One of the best ways to experience the Alps is aboard the Glacier Express, which allows magnificent views of classic Swiss scenery. It was fabulous to effortlessly pass by mountain villages of stereotypical wooden chalets complete with flower boxes and cows with bells around their necks in the fields - we also passed mountains and lakes and the engineering of the railway itself is fascinating - my husband was almost more impressed with the journey than the scenery!
