DAMASCUS HOLIDAY REVIEWS
Damascus
The antiquity of Damascus, capital of Syria and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, is rather mind-boggling for visitors. Today the large, lively, grubby city with its central old town, bustling covered bazaars, bathhouses, and riverbank gardens is exotic and interesting. On holiday in Damascus, though, the city becomes ever moremore

Historical Damascus - Mike Slavin. Date of travel: Jan 2007
Take a walk back in time when strolling the streets and souks of Damascus old city - interesting museum with the first alphabet, Roman walls, Biblical sites, remnants from the ancient camel caravans etc. The Umayyad Mosque is awesome in dimension and decoration, with wall-to-wall Persian carpets and ornate designs on the inside and a massive courtyard with fountains outside. My wife was given a long brown modesty robe with a hood to wear over her clothes and head to enter the mosque - hilarious! Interesting that inside there were screaming kids chasing each other, people picnicking on the floor, and posing for photos - weird that had to take off our shoes and cover our heads but anything else it appears goes...
