New Orleans - Chad. Date of travel: Feb 2004
Visited New Orleans a few times. All before Katrina, but people have said the French Quarter is fairly intact. So I was a bit disappointed when I first went. A lot of romance build up in my mind from all the songs and stories. And what I saw was drunk obnoxious tourists, music played with a focus on money not soul, and dirty. Now I like dirty. I spend my time barefoot in the wilderness eating roots and berries, and love the grime of Africa and Mexico, but New Orleans had an evil dirty. Not that I mind evil either. But what it all took was becoming disenchanted with the romance, and falling in love with the reality laid out before my eyes. Now I love it. Voodoo, poverty, scams... And Mardi Gras. Begins early spring. Just because it's in the south doesn't mean it's going to be warm. So prepare. And lose yourself in the madness.
