In contrast to Pennsylvania’s other major city, “fabulous Philadelphia”, Pittsburgh has long been derided as an industrial, smoky city filled with steel mills and tough townies. Pittsburgh has actively cleaned up its act, however, and a holiday in Pittsburgh with the backdrop of the Allegheny Mountains is now a happy option. The downtown area, surroundedmore by parks and colourful ethnic neighbourhoods, is leafy and clean, offering great shops, museums, galleries and restaurants.
