AMARILLO HOLIDAY REVIEWS
Amarillo
The commercial centre of the Texas panhandle, the city of Amarillo is also where tourists flock on holiday to experience the legendary life of the Wild West, rodeos and livestock auctions attracting cowboys and cowgirls in full regalia, set on working up a thirst in the dust to slake later in the saloon. Amarillo is West Texas - Valerie Mellema. Date of travel: Mar 2008
As a resident of Amarillo, I know a little bit about what to do here. The description is right in that Amarillo is not a particular interesting town, but it used to be back in it's "hey day." Today, Amarillo is just home to a lot of hardworking people who like to have fun on the weekends. There are a few historical points of interest though and a few family fun outings as well. On the north side of town is Thompson Park. In the summer you can have fun at the amusement park, Wonderland. It's not very big, but kids love it and it has a few good rollercoasters as well. Just up a bit from the actual park grounds is the Amarillo Zoo. The zoo is free and has a few good features including the monkeys on their little island, the mustangs, bears and a few big cats. There are also bison as well. The rest of the animals are typical children's zoo animals like a yard full of rabbits and goats. Palo Duro Canyon is located about thirty minutes south of Amarillo in a little town called Canyon. Canyon also happens to be the home of West Texas A&M University. The Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the country next to the Grand Canyon. There is some great camping and hiking here during the summer. You can also go horseback riding.
