RETHYMNON - John Simpson. Date of travel: Oct 2010
the old town was wonderful, we ate there every night. avoid the bar/restuarants around the harbour as they are a rip off and go further back into the old town.'to pigadi' and 'the garden'[if you can find it] are worth a visit, even the ubiquitous irish pub is good [ive forgotten the name] with excellent guinness and genuine irish barmaid. not a young persons place as there were no so called night clubs that we were aware off, but there were plenty of noisy bars with big screen t.v.'s along the back of the beach for the younger crew and footie fans.
Rethymnon-a great place to relax - Miss Maude, Mr Thatcher. Date of travel: Jan 2006
The old town is a lovely place, very picturesque. Despite being hounded by local restaurant owners the place is calm but beware of the crazy moped drivers! It is best to stay in the centre as the harbour is quite pricey and pushy bar owners can be annoying. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GO TO THE MINARIS RESTAURANT on a small side street after the main street walking towards the new town. It may seem cheap but the service is appalling. Everyone in there looked really hacked off including us because the food took so long to come out and be collected, then you had to do it all over again for the mains! I have included a pic below so you recognise it! However, opposite this horrible little restaurant is a lovely Cretian bar that is suitable for people who want to chill out with some alcohol and maybe a shisha. The staff are lovely and welcoming. The LEMONTREE GARDEN RESTAURANT IS FANTASTIC. lovely staff...food...ambience you name it, it exceeds in that area. There is a chien running around that loves to beg but you can't fault it for her, Bubu is lovely. If you sit in the back you will be under a canopy of orange and lemon trees which create a lovely atmosphere. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Also, go to the nice friendly cafes next to the Rimondi fountain; it is a nice place to sit and watch the world go by and the sleezy donut man conning vunerable tourists into buying his horrible donuts!
