The picturesque medieval town of Assisi covers a hillside in the province of Umbria in the heart of Italy, shining in the sun like a beacon as befits the birthplace of a saint. Don't Miss Assisi - Angie MD. Date of travel: Jul 2008
I work for Explorica.com, an educational travel company, and this summer I had the opportunity to participate in a tour of Italy that included Rome, Assisi, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Milan, and Verona! I really enjoyed all of the cities we visited, but one stood out for its charm, history and landscapes: the small but surprising medieval town of Assisi, located on a hillside, overlooking the incredibly beautiful mountains and valleys of Umbria. Assisi is the birthplace of St. Francis, one of the most beloved Christian saints, and the town leads down the hill to a Basilica where his body is housed. Take the time to explore this beautiful church, and the tomb below where visitors come from all over to pray and give thanks for his influence. I was very moved by the atmosphere in this church, as well as its magnificent art and architecture. Don't forget to also visit many of the smaller churches in this town, some of them dedicated to the lesser-known Clare of Assisi who fled a life of luxury to follow St. Francis' example and establish her own religious order. There are some interesting shops in this town as well, and some very good and affordable eateries. Take your time to experience Assisi at a slow pace, absorbing all of its history and peacefulness. Sit along the edges of the town, with a gelatto or two (or five), and reflect on the simply breathtaking scenery. I can't wait to go back some day!
