Set in hilly country-side a short distance south of Florence, the pretty medieval town of Siena is the buzzing heart of Tuscany, renowned for its well-preserved architecture and traditional “palio” festival, held in mid-summer, when the pageantry ends in a wild bare-back horse race through the semi-circular Piazza del Campo.
