Cozumel
A popular port of call for cruise liners, the island of Cozumel lies a few miles off of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, boasting some of the world’s best diving and snorkeling opportunities with its magnificent offshore coral reefs and beautiful beaches. The main town of San Miguel is a tourist mecca, serving those who holiday inmore
I LOVE Cozumel! - Jim in Cairns. Date of travel: Apr 2010
Fantastic friendly people. wonderful food at places like La Choza, Casa Denis and the more upmarket Guido's. The best hotel to stay in? Hacienda San Miguel on 10th. street. Grab an el cheapo renta-a-wreck and drive to San Gervasio to visit the Mayan ruins, picnic on the southern beaches and charter a fishing trip. Stay clear of the tourist trap shops along the seafront; visit a brilliant jewellers called 'Sergio's' a block south of the town square for very reasonable silver and gold. Sunday night in the square is an absolute must! Everyone dresses in their finest clothes and dance until midnight.
Avoid Cozumel - Michael. Date of travel: Jan 2010
We've spent 31 days on Cozumel; rented a villa, went to the beaches, scuba dived, many trips for evening meals (often with 5-9 people). For the most part, things went fine until we got shook down by a bar owner and the police. Evidently, pumping over $10k into their local economy wasn't enough. My friend and I went to a bar that was supposed to be "Kellys Sports Bar" a couple blocks off the waterfront, but was actually a different bar that snag people by lying to them and claiming to be Kelly's to get them in the door (we know this because the owner of Kelley's almost got into a fist fight with these guys after we figured it out and moved next door). These guys came after us and demanded a $60 payment for 4 beers after we had paid the original $60 peso bill. Long story short, they followed us down to the water front, called the police and just made up a number they say we owed. Being from the U.S., we expected the police to not be a part of this obvious shake down. We were wrong. The police said pay them what they ask or go to jail. $37 is about what I spend taking my family through the McDonald's drive through, but it's enough for me never to come back to this island again (this was our third trip). If the police can't be trusted and the bar owners know they can shake you down, why bother? Plenty of other places to go without this type of hassle. Travel there at your own risk; the police won't help you.
Not going back to Cozumel - Jennifer. Date of travel: Apr 2009
Although the water is beautiful in Cozumel... we got ripped off from the greedy locals left and right. I don't have the desire to return. We stayed in the Iberostar all inclusive resort. The resort property was beautiful and the staff was nice however you can't snorkel right off the coast as advertised and we have better Mexican food in Colorado than at the resort. DO NOT fall for the rental car scam at the airport... it's a scam to get you hooked into a time share. After an hour wasted at the airport when we got there, our overall vacation just went downhill from there. The only highlights were the beautiful huge iguanas on the resort property and Chankanaab state park where we swam with dolphins. Otherwise not at all what we expected for the $$ we paid.
Cozumel trip - Dan & Kelly Hodges. Date of travel: Nov 2008
7 nights and 8 days in Cozumel, had lots of fun, did something every day. Spent 3 days scuba diving, one day at hidden worlds, this place is a must see, the people were great and the place was great zip lines, sky cycle, cenotes snorkelling a very fun filled day. Spent one morning riding horse back - good time but too many biting bugs this time of year. We did the pirate show, we thought it was great my son loved it, the lobster and steak dinner was great. My wife and kids did the dolphin discovery they where all smiles from ear to ear.
Cozumel is a sleepy island - Anonymous. Date of travel: Aug 2008
It is beautiful but I recommend you stay on the mainland because all the good stuff is over there and you don't have enough time in a day or even 3 days to see it all. You have to pay $24 roundtrip on the ferry. If you stay on the mainland you can take the ferry over to Cozumel once and that's pretty much all the time you need.
Cozumel has some nice places but the Wyndham is not one of them - Ron and Wendy Larson. Date of travel: Jun 2008
Don't go to Cozumel expecting to get great shopping deals. Most shops are owned by one person and they set the prices. Signs every where saying don't ask because the price on the item is the price you pay. Go to your local wal-mart for a better deal. Away from the Wyndham we had some good means and night life was good.
Diving in Cozumel - Aaron. Date of travel: May 2008
Cozumel is one of the best places to dive. Clear waters, good wildlife and amazing reefs. Scuba Mau is an awesome dive shop. Friendly folk who are multi-lingual and great interaction. They actually love what they do and do it the right way. I had a blast and definitely plan on going back.

Cozumel is a beautiful island. Best bet is to rent a car for the day and make excursions. Plenty of places to stay.

Cozumel diving
If you go to Cozumel, you must go diving! For inexperienced or experienced divers Cozumel is ideal. The reefs are exquisite, the fish varied, visibility is unreal! We went diving with Maurizio from Scubamaucozumel (find it on the internet). He was so passionate about diving, so professional and a great laugh! We absolutely loved it! It was so much fun and he is such a great instructor that we went diving with him for a whole week instead of just the one day we had planned!!! They're a new outfit and so all their equipment is brand new but he has bundles of experience! Him and his wife Opal also had lots of great recommendations for hotels and restaurants on the island and elsewhere!! Fantastic experience!
Cozumel is REAL nice - David F. Bautista. Date of travel: Jul 2007
Cozumel is very nice, good shopping, easy to get around. You'll enjoy the speedy hydro-boat trips to Playa Del Carmen where there's good food and good shopping.

I went to Cozumel and I have to say it was fantastic - I stayed at the Iberostar Cozumel and it was out of this world.I would reccomend the upgraded premair seats to make the journey more enjoyable. The hotel was on its own little beach and the swim up bar is a definate must. I am planning to return next year. Tour Operator: First Choice
I live in Cozumel - Baldwin's. Date of travel: Jan 1970
Sorry for your experience Jennifer. Cozumel is not really like that. Yes there are people out there trying to get what they can out of you, but I think that it is not a problem isolated to Cozumel. If you go to larger cities in the US, pick-pockets take and give only pain in return. We run a B&B here in Cozumel. We have many repeat guests who only vacation here. I think if you have the right guidance in your experience in Cozumel, you will love it.
