Sterkfontein Caves - Pat. Date of travel: Mar 2006
Its hard to believe that just under an hour away from Johannesburg's hustle and bustle there can be so much tranquility. The Magaliesburg is a beautiful area of green mountains and rolling fields and some cute little towns. One of the highlights, is the Cradle of Mankind area - this is were our earliest ancestors come from and a MUST is a visit to the Sterkfontein caves. They discovered the oldest human relative here called Little Foot several years go and the caves themselve are spectacular (not for people who cant manage steps - there is also a part where you have to crawl but there is an alternate route). We had an excellent, very articulate guide who pointed out many parts of interest. They also have an interesting display at the start (its all been vamped up in recent years), but we didnt have much time before our tour started to actually enjoy it all or absorb it. but anyway, the tour is great (stalactites, stalamites, a video on Little Foot, an underground lake etc). Beautiful surrounds, too. Apparently the actual Cradle of Mankind exhibit/attraction is a complete waste of money, its just tourist trap - rather go to the caves!!
