Do yourself a favour and go to Soweto - Dave and Adrienna Holloway. Date of travel: Jan 2006
Do yourself a favour and go on a township tour in Soweto - this is a chance to see a place outside of the usual tourist attractions and game viewing etc in South Africa. For the brave, you can even stay there (we unforuntately were running out of time so couldnt). Soweto stands as a reminder of apartheid and yet is vibrant and fascinating and filled with friendly people wanting to show you how they live. Its a mix of housing and sights, sounds and colors - from shacks to wealthy areas. There is so much history here (from youth riots in the 1970s and other anti-apartheid demonstrations and campaigns) and of course this is where Nelson Mandela lived here. Different companies offer different tours and just check them out and see which one sounds good - we recommend a trip to a shebeen (informal bar) to try some traditional beer and a great vibe. Tours are usually safe (obviously DONT attempt a self-guided tour!!). Get a taste of real South Africa... go to Soweto.
